Do you ever wonder about PRIDE? Just what is pride, anyway?
pride: noun – a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired; a sense of achievement. (Webster’s)
pride: noun – pride is an inwardly directed emotion that carries two antithetical meanings. With a negative connotation pride refers to a foolishly and irrationally corrupt sense of one’s personal value, status or accomplishments, used synonymously with hubris. (Wikipedia)
“Now the man is thought to be proud who thinks himself worthy of great things, being worthy of them; for he who does so beyond his deserts is a fool, but no virtuous man is foolish or silly.” (Aristotle)
Then there’s Hubris. “As one might expect, hubris is not necessarily associated with high self-esteem but with highly fluctuating or variable self-esteem. Excessive feelings of hubris have a tendency to create conflict and sometimes terminating close relationships, which has led it to be understood as one of the few emotions with no clear positive or adaptive functions.” (Rhodwalt, et al.)
Growing up in my humble home and one of nine children, this is what we heard non-stop from our beloved Mother: “Pride is very important and we all absolutely must have it!” She explained the difference in what she referred to as “true pride and false pride”. She was very wise, my dear Mother, and explained life’s lessons to us in plain, simple and loving terms. Where pride was concerned, she taught us the huge difference between the two prides and there was no mistake by which we were to live our lives.
Here are the BIG Mistakes we must be mindful of as we live our gift of Life here. If we are to be favored by our Lord and Savior with His unconditional LOVE, the least we can do is what my Mother always told us kids: “If you know right from wrong, always choose right and you can’t go wrong”…now how simple is that?! Thank you, Mother!!
*Mistakes People Make With Pride:
Think they don’t have any. (Galatians 6:3)
Forget it made the devil fall. (Isaiah 14:13; Luke 10:18)
Rarely say they’re sorry / apologize / ask for forgiveness / admit they were wrong.
Forget that confession of sin breaks it’s grip. (James 5:16;1 John 1:9)
Don’t realize it may be the very reason why the are in a downward spiral. (Prov. 16:18)
Hold others to a higher standard than themselves (self-righteousness). (Romans 2:1-3; Matthew 23:1-4)
Displace God as judge, jury and executioner. (Luke 9:53-57)
Turn away others according to their own criteria versus God’s. (Luke 9:49-50)
Overlook that it’s the source of all conflict. (James 4:1-10)
Think they can serve God and remain alone. (Hebrews 10:25)
Don’t understand that only Jesus Christ can free from the ultimate pride: an unrepentant heart and a refusal to surrender to God’s will and way. (Romans 6:23; Psalm 18:3) ———- (The Bible)
We already have The Ten Commandments for living our daily lives in honor of Him—Thank you Moses!!…so when I read these big mistakes where PRIDE is concerned, I felt maybe we all could use a little check-up in this department. I’ll be the last one to throw the first stone, so as in my dear Mothers’ fashion , I humbly offer you this list of suggestions for a better YOU.
God is Good! God is Great!! Always!!!
I love you and yours,
PS – Everyone likes a nice decent person, and most are striving to fit the description. Why is it so hard then to be good sometimes? Moments of weakness happens in all of us. FORGIVE YOURSELF—YOU’RE WORTH it!!
